Networking is the most cost-effective tool for reaching an endless stream of influential contacts. The concept of networking is simple: It's planning and making contacts and sharing information for professional and personal gain. The key words in that definition are planning and personal.

Networking has to be planned--it doesn't just happen, and quality networking happens only when supportive or friendly relationships, as well as business contacts, are built.

Networking is a 24-hour process that's about giving as well as getting. You can't expect to attend one network meeting every six months and get results. You must always be on the lookout for people you can include in your network, and whose network you can join. Understand that you may not benefit immediately, but possibly somewhere down the line. It may take years to see results. Or it may bring a phone call overnight. The following are points to help you continually build your network.
  • PREPARE. Before arriving at a meeting, find out as much as you can about the agenda and the group hosting the event. Ask a question about the speaker or the length of the program. This way you will have forged a connection and will have a friendly face to look for when you arrive.

  • PSYCHE YOURSELF UP. Your attitude is your most important asset. Refocus your preoccupation with your own anxieties by thinking about the other attendees. Pretend you are about to host a party and concentrate on helping others have a good time. Don't think of the people at the event as a mass entity (you'll be overwhelmed) but as individuals whom you can meet one-on-one. Rehearse what you'll say.

  • TALK SMALL. Have at least three ''small talk'' questions in mind that will serve as conversation openers.(''How did you find out about the meeting tonight?") Ask open-ended questions that draw people out, then turn their answers into two-way conversations.

  • SEEK EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO MEET PEOPLE. Don't wait until you actually actually walk into the meeting room to begin networking. If you arrive at the meeting place by car and notice a group of people in the parking lot, take the opportunity to strike up a conversation."Are you going to the meeting? Did you run into any traffic on the freeway?" Whether you are in the elevator, the restroom or waiting at the bar, start talking.

  • USE YOUR NAME TAG TO YOUR ADVANTAGE. Attach your name to your right lapel. This way, when you extend your hand to meet someone, the person's eye moves easily to your name tag. Make sure your name tag is easy to read.

  • FIND KINDRED SPIRITS. Making eye contact is one of the most crucial tools for successful mingling. When you are seeking out people to talk with, scan the reception area for eye contact and friendly smiles. A person who averts his or her eyes will not be easily approachable.

  • KEEP PLENTY OF BUSINESS CARDS. You should always have sufficient business cards handy for each situation. Your business cards should be attractive and representative of who you are and what you do.

  • THANK EVERYONE WHO HELPS YOU OR PROVIDES YOU WITH LEADS. At any given meeting, you're bound to come away with at least three ideas or tips. Thank the people who offered them, with a one-minute phone call or a brief handwritten note, to let them know what their help meant to you.

  • DO REMEMBER THAT NETWORKING IS A CHALLENGE. Always push yourself. Approach new people at meetings and start a conversation--even if you're in a bad mood. Taking the initiative really does pay off. Whether you're a novice or an expert, you only get as much out of networking as you put into it!

Things to Ponder

Do lipton employees take coffee breaks?

What hair color do they put on the driver's licenses of bald men?

How much deeper would oceans be if sponges didn't live there?

You never really learn to swear until you learn to drive.

Strange! No one ever says,''It 's only a game'' when their team is winning.

If a cow laughed, would milk come out her nose?

So what's the speed of dark?

If you're sending someone some Styrofoam, what do you pack it in?

Is it true that cannibals don't eat clowns because they taste funny?

Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

If it's true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the OTHERS here for?

Why do they put pictures of criminals up in the Post Office? What are we supposed to do...write to these men? Why don't they just put their pictures on the postage stamps so the mailmen could look for them while they deliver the mail?

As I said before, I never repeat myself!

Married Couple and The Box (humor)

A man and a women were married for 40 years. When they first got married the man said, '' I am putting a box under the bed. You must promise never to look in it."

In all their 40 years of marriage the woman never looked. However on the afternoon of their 40th anniversary curiosity got the best of her and she lifted the lid and peeked inside. In the box were 3 empty beer bottles and $1874.25 in small bills. She closed the box and put it back under the bed. Now that she knew what was in the box, she was doubly curious as to why.

That evening they were out for a special dinner at their favorite restaurant. After dinner the woman could no longer contain her curiosity and she confessed, saying:''I am so sorry. For all these years I kept my promise and never looked . However today the temptation was too much and I gave in. But now I need to know why do you keep the bottles in the box?''

The man thought for a while and said: ''I guess after all these wonderful years you deserve to know the truth: "Whenever I was unfaithful to you I put an empty beer bottle in the box under the bed to remind myself not to do it again.''

The woman was shocked, but said: ''I am very disappointed and saddened but I guess after all those years away from home on the road, temptation does happen and I guess that 3 times is not that bad considering the years.''

They hugged and made their peace.

A little while later the woman asked the man: ''Why do you have all that money in the box?''

To which the man answered: ''Whenever the box filled with empties, I cashed them in.''

Fresh, frozen or canned vegetables all have the same amount of fiber. Canned vegetables have the most sodium...fresh have the least. Frozen and fresh vegetables are equal in vitamins, but the vitamins in canned vegetables are largely in the water---which is usually thrown away. Canned vegetables are usually cheapest...fresh,most expensive. To retain the most nutrients: Buy fresh vegetables, and cook them for as short a time and with as little water as possible. (James Slavin,RD)

Most ''special'' toothpaste's promise more than they deliver. Examples: Gum protectors...tarter fighters...brands with baking soda..whiteners...desensitizers.Bottom line: Proper brushing and flossing, along with regular dental care, can alleviate many dental problems. (Consumer Reports on Health)

The tastiest low-fat ice cream flavor is chocolate. Because chocolate has 500 flavor chemicals---with no single dominant---low-fat versions taste nearly as good as high-fat. Vanilla has a single one dominant flavor chemical, so low-fat vanilla tastes harsher than high-fat.

Some foods help more than others when it comes to handling a cold. Chicken soup really makes you feel better faster---though researchers do not know why. Sweeteners like honey, molasses and sugar soothe sore throats. The sour taste of lemon tea and sour lemon drops helps saliva flow---also soothing the throat. Hot peppers, horseradish and onions make it easier to blow your nose and cough up mucus.

The case against taking vitamins grows, we hear from Victor Herbert,MD. In fresh foods, vitamins exist in shelf-stable and shelf-unstable forms, naturally balanced against each other.

Problem
: Only the shelf-stable forms are put in supplements, so there is no natural balance. Recent projects led by DR.Herbert and others show that loading up on only one form of a nutrient often is not beneficial---and can be harmful...possibly triggering heart disease, cancer and liver and kidney disease. Supplements don't provide the many other needed micronutrients present in food.

Best: Eat your nutrients ---at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.(One serving equals one piece of large fruit or about one-half cup of vegetables or berries.)

Spring begins about six hours later every year---until a leap year moves it back 24 hours. This year, spring arrived on Monday,March 20, at 2:35am(EST).
